Every year, over a million dogs and cats are sent to California shelters–more than half of them will not find a forever home. Although the numbers are so huge, there are several ways that you, as an individual, can help.
First and foremost, be a responsible pet parent and spay and neuter your pets. Although there is nothing cuter than a litter of puppies or kittens, if they don’t have a home or proper care, where will they end up? Every year, millions of animals are euthanized in this country; and that’s not even the worst fate they could suffer!
Right now the California Veterinary Medical Board, Petco, the Humane Society of the United States, ASPCA, Best Friends Animal Society, PETA, the Jason Debus Heigl Foundation, the Millan Foundation, and the California DMV are trying to launch the California Pet Lover’s License Plate program. But they need your help.
The California Pet Lover’s License Plate will provide a large scale, permanent funding source for spay & neuter programs. These free and low-cost programs are desperately needed to help address the unnecessary killing of so many animals in shelters in California; but they can’t start production of these plates until they’ve received 7,500 pre-orders. As of the beginning of April, they are only at 4,043.
Even if you’re not in California–maybe you could mention this program so that more and more people across the country can find out about it and spread the word. Right now, the deadline to reach the pre-order amount is June 2012–I’m placing my order this week, how about you?
